Olympics in Franklin Park Survey
The Stonybrook Neighborhood Association (SNA) conducted a survey in May 2015 to gauge our neighborhood's sentiment regarding the proposed use of Franklin Park as an Olympic venue in 2024. Since our neighborhood abuts the Western edge of Franklin Park we wanted to get a sense of the thoughts, comments, and level of support for the Olympics proposal among local residents. The survey was open to residents of the SNA area, was advertised by email, through our online forum, and with posters. We received responses from 100 of our neighbors.
According to our survey, a majority of SNA residents (53%) say they are unlikely to support using Franklin Park as an Olympic venue, with 23% on the fence, and 23% supportive of the plan. SNA residents are clearly skeptical of bringing the Olympics to Franklin Park and they have concerns about losing access to the park, changes to Franklin Park's landscape, and whether park improvements will actually occur. On the other hand, residents are avid Franklin Park users and are eager for improvements and maintenance in a variety of areas, including the woodlands, pathways, and safety in the park. Some neighbors would support the Olympics in Franklin Park if Boston 2024 were willing to make significant investments in the park.
In response to the four ballot questions proposed for the Boston Municipal Election ballot in November, an overwhelming majority are opposed to bringing the Olympics to Boston (70%), especially if public money is used (82%), financial guarantees are made (90%), or eminent domain is used (95%).
Franklin Park is a treasured part of our community. The SNA wants to ensure that, along with other park neighbors and users, our views are taken into account in the discussion about hosting Olympic events. Please find attached the data from our survey, which we are distributing to elected officials, 2024 Olympics organizers, and local news organizations.
